About This Event
The Third Annual Crusaders Against Cancer 5k is a road race (& walk) on the campus of The College Of The Holy Cross. Sponsored by Carr Financial Group and supporting the 15-40 Connection Worcester-based cancer 501c3 charity as well as Team Tracey - Cure for Parkinson's Disease. Students and parents, men and women, boys and girls...the entire community...EVERYONE...all are welcome to run this unique course all for a great cause.
Henry Carr
Last year, Holy Cross sophomore, Henry Carr, spoke to race participants about his experience with cancer and the importance of early detection. He also shared that he recently relapsed and was to start treatment again. Tragically, those treatments would prove ineffective and on June 5th 2017, Henry passed away. His courage, humility and lust for life carried Henry to the end. He accomplished a lot of things that were on his "bucket list" in his final months and, despite his deteriorating health, continued to make plans for trips and experiences. Henry was nothing short of a remarkable young man. This year we honor Henry Carr for being an inspiration, for all he did for those around him and for the organizations where he volunteered. God bless Henry.
The Course
No other race like it exists in New England. Weave through the award-winning beauty of the Holy Cross Campus...the gardens, the architecture, the views...all spectacular. The course starts at the Hart Center at the very top of Mount St. James. Race markers and volunteers will direct runners along a carefully designed course that will display some of the most beautiful aspects on this great campus. Runners will appreciate the gradual downslope through the first half of the course followed by a gradual incline that brings runners back to the Hart Center.
Parking & Showers
October 28th is Family Weekend at Holy Cross. The Facilities Department at HC has made available parking on-campus for runners. The Hart Center locker rooms will be open for those looking to shower and head out to the other Family Weekend activities and the Football Game.
Why participate and why 15-40 Connection?
Would you recognize a cancer symptom? The ONLY demographic to NOT see an improvement in cancer survival rates since the 1970's are those age 15-to-40. The primary reason is delayed diagnoses. The 15-40 Connection, started right in Worcester, reaches out to high school and college students to help them understand, through shared first hand experiences, how to recognize and react to symptoms that could be serious. The 15-40 Connection has grown nationwide and has, among its many successes, been credited with saving lives. 100% of the funds raised will be donated to this extremely impactful charity.
Team Tracey - Cure Parkinson's Disease
Team Tracey is a charitable organization with a single goal: engage others in the race to cure Parkinson's Disease. Team Tracey was organized by the friends and family of Chris and Annie Tracey in the wake of Chris's diagnosis with Parkinson's at age 34 in 2013. Working through Team Fox, the grassroots community fundraising project of the Michael J. Fox Foundation, Team Tracey has raised tens of thousands of dollars to advance a cure. 100 percent of Team Fox funding directly supports research into a cure for Parkinson's.
