What a lot of people don't realize is that birds as pets can be a large undertaking. They are very delicate animals, messy, can be very loud, etc. As a result, birds of all shapes and sizes are often given up, left behind/abandoned, or in unsafe hoarding situations. Some parrots may be viewed as a cool idea at first, only to 'live' in a lonesome room in a cage without a chance to interact or spread its wings. Thankfully, in Rhode Island, there is a bird sanctuary called Foster Parrots--- essentially an adoption agency for birds who come from all of these unfortunate situations. Foster Parrots normally houses a variety of over 400 birds. However, a fire recently broke out at the sanctuary on April 1, 2021 and approximately 80 birds (parrots, cockatoos, etc.) tragically passed and some others injured. As you may know, some birds have a very lengthy lifespan, so it is even more tragic to think about how much life some of these birds still had left when they were lost.
Each year, Foster Parrots holds it's annual Sneak for Beaks 5K to raise funds for the non-profit sanctuary. I am normally not able to participate due to work, but this year I am and this-will-be-my-very-first-5K!!! When I initially signed up for this event back in March, I was not planning on fundraising. But, with the recent tragedy, the sanctuary needs funds more than ever. So, only if you are able, please cheer me on while I 'train' and help me raise money for a place that ensures that parrots and birds have a home and are well taken care of.
Maxwell (and Jon and I) thank you so much for your help in taking care of his relatives and buddies.
