In some ways, elephants are a lot like humans. They are highly intelligent and caring animals. When their babies cry, parents will soothe them, showing empathy. They celebrate births and mourn those who pass away. And, of course, they have incredible memories.

I will never forget the time a few years ago when my husband and I were driving down a road in southern Sri Lanka and we saw a wild elephant grazing on the side of the road at dusk. I had never seen such a sight in my life.

However, us humans continue to kill elephants for their tusks and they are losing their natural habitats. They need our help, so I'm participating in the Boston 5k Run/Walk for Elephants to raise money for African elephants, with profits going to Elephant Aware Conservancy in Southern Kenya. Check out their webpage at elephantawareusa.org for additional information on their work.

This 5K is an event for everyone and a chance to run, walk or jog around the beautiful Chestnut Hill Reservoir while raising awareness and valuable funds for elephant protection.

Please join me for the event or make a donation, if you can.
