The Cause
We are so proud of raising over $8,000 for Children’s National through this race last year and are excited to be supporting them again this year. Donations to Children’s National help create a healing environment for every child. From the balloons in the main atrium to MRI machines that look like submarines, their facilities are specially designed to let kids feel like kids when they're in the hospital or at a doctor's appointment. But these expenses are not covered by insurance. With support from people like you, Children’s is able to update their facilities, maintain equipment, and do all the things that make Children's National a home away from home for children and families. Last year Children’s saw a total of 237,047 families. Of that, 24,274 were from Montgomery County (roughly 10%). Moreover, Children’s has served many families from the Whitman community directly. Read more about what Children’s National does on their website.
We are so fortunate to have a miracle child join us for the 5k race! Sammy Rosenkranz is an energetic and hilarious 9 year old. Soon after Sammy’s birth, doctors diagnosed him with tetralogy of fallot and a large ventricular septal defect. Both of these congenital heart defects were treatable, but Sammy would have to wait until he was 3 months old for surgery. It only took two weeks after birth before a turn of events; Sammy was admitted into Children’s National with signs of heart failure. Children’s National performed open heart surgery within a week of his admittance to repair both of his conditions. Sammy responded so well to surgery that he was able to leave the Cardiac ICU in half the time that was expected! Today, Sammy is a happy nine year old who never stops smiling. He is a dancing machine and has been known to capture the crowd’s attention with his sweet dance moves. Sammy also enjoys running, climbing and playing with his older sister, Reese. Sammy’s mother says “We are truly humbled by Sammy’s ability to heal and amazed by the talent and level of excellence of care that we received at Children’s National”.
