2020 Virtual Run of the Mattapoisett Road Road Race
We are as upset as anyone that this year's race needed to be postponed until next year, but do not worry; we have a plan for this year!!! We are hosting our first ever Virtual Run. The Old Rochester Seniors are still going off to college in the fall and we want to honor many of them with college stipends. Last year we gave out over $20,000 in stipends, and in the last 10 years, we have given over $135,000 to our local seniors. Since the Old Rochester Class of 2020 has missed out on so many timed-honored senior year events, we are hoping our runners will help support them again especially this year.
A few of our sponsors have not been hit as badly as other sponsors and they want to help out. They are covering the transaction fees that we can't avoid so every full $25.00 entry will directly benefit our seniors. They usually cover our shirt costs, but this year they want as much money going directly to the kids as possible since they are concerned our participant numbers may be lower than our usual race numbers.
We have had runners asking about a virtual run and our legendary t-shirts, so we are offering a very limited t-shirt for an added cost of $10 that will cover the cost of the shirt and shipping. All orders for shirts must be submitted by June 1st, so we can order and deliver in time for the virtual run.
Now, the news on the virtual run: it'll be 5 miles, just like all of our Mattapoisett Road Races - forget the kilometer stuff! We are sticking with the good old American 5 miler. This would have been the 50th running of our race on July 4th, and we aren't about to change now.... except for this virtual stuff.
The best part is you can pick any time or day between Friday, June 26 and Thursday, July 2nd to run your 5 miles. Everyone knows that every July 4th at 9 AM it is oppressively hot, and it seems like 98% of the course is up hill. So, pick any place and any time you like. After you have signed up and completed your "virtual run", all we really need from you is a picture from your run so we can splash it on the website on July 4th. Times don't mean as much in a virtual race. Some might find a flat course, others might run down the side of a mountain, and others may treadmill it. We just want everyone staying healthy, continuing to work out, and be in even better shape for next year's race.
Please. Run for our Seniors. Run because you need to stay (or get) in shape. And run because you wouldn't have missed the race no matter how hot and muggy or rainy or whatever other excuses there are, excuses weren't good enough before and they still don't hold water now. Even our sentences run! Please join our virtual run and send some love to the Old Rochester Class of 2020. Then, get ready for next year's actual 50th running of the Mattapoisett Road Race because it will be AMAZING!!!
I know that running in an event that is organized as a virtual activity where I run on my own, at a date and time of my choosing, in a location and running route of my choosing, which will not have any support or security measures in place by the Mattapoisett Road Race is a potentially hazardous activity, which could result in injury or death. I acknowledge that I am participating in the activity outlined by this virtual event by my own free will and at my own personal risk. I will not participate in a virtual event unless I am medically able and properly trained, and by my signature, I certify that I am medically able to perform this event, and am in good health, and I am properly trained. I attest that if my community has a shelter in place order, that I will only participate in the virtual event by using a personal treadmill, and I will not run outside in the community during the duration of a shelter in place order. I agree to follow all pedestrian safety ordinances including running on a sidewalk where available and not in the road. I agree to follow the rules of the road if no sidewalk or multi-use trail is available and I will run against oncoming traffic and not with traffic.
I agree to abide by any decision of a race official relative to any aspect of my participation in this virtual event, including the right of any official to deny or suspend my participation for any reason whatsoever. I attest that I having read the rules of the virtual race scheduled for June 26, 2020 to July 2, 2020 including the terms in this waiver, the timeline of the virtual event, and agree to abide by them.
