About This Event
We are thrilled to announce that this year’s 3rd Annual Cupcake Run is going virtual! Although we would love to be in-person, we are excited that we can still have a safe fundraising event during these trying times. We invite each of you to participate by walking, running, biking (whichever you prefer) a 5k or 10k on your own time, ANYTIME DURING THE MONTH OF MARCH.

For those of you that live in Lexington, MA – we have gone ahead and created a 5k course for you to follow, should you wish to use it. But anyone can participate from any location!
About the Cause
The Cupcake Run has inspired novice and experienced runners to partcipate in a race through historic Lexington, Massachusets to support children and adults impacted by the family of disorders known as leukodystrophies.

The Cupcake Run is being led by Lexington native Nicole Kefalas, Founder of Empower Fitness, in honor of her niece and goddaughter Calliope “Callie” Carr, who suffers from metachromatc leukodystrophy or MLD. All the funds will benefit our Cure MLD initiative to support kids and families impacted by Cal's disease.

In 2013, Cal's brother PJ had the idea to sell cupcakes to fund research to cure his little sister, Cal's disease. MLD is an inherited, neurological disorder (in the same family as Tay-Sachs disease) that attacks the brain's white matter. Children who are born healthy lose the ability to walk, talk, eat and see. It's been 7 years since the first cupcake fundraiser, and 45,000 cupcakes later, and we expect to see the FDA approve a gene therapy to treat MLD.

Covid-19 has not made easy things for any of us, but particularly not families impacted by leukodystrophy. Cure MLD continues to work with families - from around the globe - who need help to get life-saving therapies and to make Cal's disease, MLD, one of the five percent of rare diseases with an FDA approved therapy.

Even though we cannot be with you in person this year, we are not going anywhere. We are following Cal's lead to keep defying expectations, keep finding joy in what is possible and working to make miracles possible for children and families.
