Event Information
5km Race
The 5km run/walk will start at 8:00 am in the same location as the half marathon. The course is very flat except one 100-meter section that goes down a set of stone steps through the woods. Runners should use caution on this portion of the course.
Event Capacity
The capacity of the event which includes participants in the half marathon plus the 5k is 2,800 people. Once this number has been reached then only 200 Charity slots will be available. The overall event capacity is 3,000.
Half Marathon (Charity Slot)
This special sub-event category is intended for half marathon participants who would like to raise funds for our two beneficiaries. When you register in this category you will be part of the Age Group awards. One third of the entry fee will be paid directly to Habitat For Humanity of Greater Portland and one third to Independant Transportation Network of Portland. After the first 2,800 people register for the event only the Charity Slot registrations will be available.
Start Corral
A start corral process will be used in 2013 to facilitate a more efficient and convenient race day experience for all participants. This process is necessary because a large field of runners is anticipated and due to the presence of bottlenecks on the course. During the registration process runners will be asked to submit their expected pace for a half marathon race. On race day runners will seed themselves inside the corral based on their expected pace. Runners will not be held to the expected pace from registration; they may choose to seed themselves anywhere in the corral. In general the fastest runners will be seeded first in the corral and the slowest runners/walkers will be seeded toward the back.
Cancellation Policy
Although rare sometimes races must be cancelled due to unexpected unsafe race conditions – i.e. Hurricane Irene 8/28/11 and Sandy 10/30/12. If there is an event due to an Act Of God — i.e. hurricane, dangerously high heat index >105, or a state of emergency is declared by municipal authorities – the race will be cancelled. If the race is cancelled due to an Act Of God it will not be postponed and no refunds will be given.
Deferral Policy
If you cannot attend the race for any reason you may request a deferral of your base entry fee and merchandise purchases (not including online processing fees) to the next year. You must send an email to erik@justgiddyup.com by 6:00 PM (EST) on Sunday 6/16/13 to request a deferral. Your name will be removed from the public participants list when the deferral is processed. Later, after registration for the 2014 event has been opened, you will receive an email with a unique promotional code. You will then need to register online for the 2014 event and submit the promotional code. A $10 administrative fee will be applied through a reduction in the value of the promotional code.
Refund Option
We realize that life happens and sometimes it’s not possible or advisable for runners to participate in a race. Sometimes runners suffer injuries while training, learn that they’re pregnant, get called to perform military duty, lose a job, or must attend to a family emergency. Sometimes races get cancelled due to Acts Of God – i.e. hurricane Irene 8/28/11 or hurricane Sandy 10/29/12. In the past we didn’t offer refunds but we did allow runners to transfer their fees to another race under certain circumstances. Starting in 2013 runners can pay an extra fee when they register online to receive a Refund Option.
If you register for the half marathon race the refund option will cost $10. If you register for the 5k race the refund option will cost $5.
If you purchase the Refund Option you may request a refund of your base entry fee and any other merchandise purchases. Online processing fees and the Refund Option cost are not included. For example, if you registered for the half marathon on 12/31/13 and purchased a shirt and a glass mug your total cost would be $50(base) + $15(option cost) + $12(shirt) + $5(mug) +$4.25(online fee) = $86.25. If you request a refund you will receive $67 ($50 base +$12 shirt +$5 mug).
You must purchase the Refund Option at the time of registration. Refund Options cannot be purchased after you’ve completed the online registration process. You must exercise the Refund Option no later than Thursday 7/11/13 at 11:59 PM (EST). Requests for a refund must be done in writing by sending an email to erik@justgiddyup.com. Processing may take up two weeks. Refunds will be credited to the credit card that you used at the time of registration. No cash or checks will be sent. Refunds will be processed by Racewire, our online registration provider. If the race is cancelled you may request a refund. If you defer your race entry to the 2014 event you will also retain the Refund Option.
Refund Policy
No refunds will be offered unless you purchased a Refund Option at the time of registration.

Short Sleeve Performance Race Shirts 100% Recycled Polyester, 100% Made in USA
To align with our conservation ethic and reduce waste, our race entry fee does not include a race shirt. We take our shirts very seriously and only want to offer something that runners will appreciate. We are pleased to offer short sleeve, men's and women's, moisture-wicking performance fabric shirts made from 100% recycled polyester. The shirts perform like typical moisture-wicking polyester shirts, but use 70% less energy to produce. Each shirt is produced by using 8-12 raw post-consumer plastic bottles. The shirts are made by a Brunswick, Maine-based company, Atayne that is committed to making products that are safe for both human health and the environment. These shirts are produced from fiber to finish in the US and are reviewed by a third party to guarantee environmental and human health standards. Runners must buy their shirt by June 9th, 2013, in order to be guaranteed the desired size on race day. Orders may be placed after this date, however sizes cannot be guaranteed – we will do our best to forecast the number of shirts needed after 6/9. Shirts must be claimed by a runner or their designee at one of the pre-race packet pickups or before 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 14, 2013. Shirts not claimed after this time will be forfeited. Shirts will not be shipped after the race.
