About the Event
Nearly everyone knows SOMEONE affected by cancer. Almost 12 million people in the United States today are living with cancer. Thankfully, more and more people are surviving. However, once cancer has left your body it does not leave your life. Come join us in supporting and honoring cancer survivors in our community!

2015 Honoree
The Northwest Family YMCA would like to honor Bev Empey as our 2015 Livestrong Survivor.
Bev exemplifies courage in the face of a cancer diagnosis, compassion to her fellow Livestrong participants and an inspiration to those considering the program.
Bev entered our Livestrong Summer Program on May 21, 2013. She was diagnosed in December, 2012 with Left Ductal Carcinoma, Stage 2. After having two mammograms and with a positive biopsy result, Bev elected to undergo a bilateral mastectomy in February of 2013. “With Blessings”, she did not need chemotherapy or radiation, but continues to be followed by her oncologist routinely.
Bev entered the Livestrong Program enthusiastic, positive, focused and determined to achieve her goals of improving her cardio endurance and strength following surgery. She attended each Livestrong evening, twice a week. Her focus was on her structured program, which started in the Gulick Gym and then progressed to the Fitlynxx Circuit in the Wellness Center. The pool was also added to her program. She attended Aqua Fit classes and Stretch-n-Tone Classes as well as water walked on her off days from the Livestrong Program. Bev also included walking the mall 3-4 times a week and remained upbeat and positive.
By the end of the program, Bev’s cardio endurance and strength has taken a huge improvement. On Graduation Day in July 2013 at Camp Northpoint, Bev achieved her goal of climbing and completing the Zip Line! She was the only one from the group and we stood there supporting her and cheering her on!
Bev remains as “Y” member staying physically active at the Northwest YMCA, continues to promote the Livestrong Program and is a mentor for our program. Bev is supported by her loving husband, Bill along with her two son’s Bob and Bill, and daughter-in-law, Jennifer.
It truly has been an honor, privilege and blessing to work with Bev thru her Livestrong program and as a Livestrong supporter at the Northwest YMCA. Bev, you are an inspiration, a true shining star for all cancer survivors and the Northwest Family YMCA Livestrong Program! - Pam Clark
