About this event
The scenic run/walk will begin at the American Legion Building in Hollandale. Coordinated by Blue Ribbon 4-H Club, proceeds will be split between the 4-H Club, local food pantry and program development to support mental health for farmers.
"Steps of Hope for Farmers" is shedding light on areas of darkness in rural communities. One in four Americans experiences mental health problems or disorders in any given year. This means that someone we care about or work with is experiencing mental health problems right now and could be connected to farming. The Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC) released a 2016 report that looked at suicide rates for different occupational groups. One surprising statistic to many was suicide rates for workers in the agricultural, fishing and forestry industry are the highest of any other occupational group, exceeding rates in other high-risk populations, including veterans.
We are moving forward together to create awareness of mental health in farming. Let's support our dedicated farmers devoted to being stewards of the land, environment and caring for livestock. The Blue Ribbon 5K Milk Run and 1-Mile Walk will also donate milk to a local food pantry.
Did you know… On average, people served by food banks receive the equivalent of less than one gallon per person per year? That’s because while American are generous with their food bank donations of canned and dry goods, fresh milk is much harder to donate because its perishable. Even though milk is one of the most requested items, it’s difficult for food banks to meet the demand. All dairy milk provides nine essential nutrients. In fact, milk is the top food source for calcium, potassium and vitamin D, three of the four "nutrients of public health concern" — nutrients that many Americans, including children, are most lacking in their diets.
Join us on Saturday, July 7 for the Blue Ribbon Milk Run as we take steps of hope for farmers.
